Laser Hair Transplant – What They Don’t Want You to Know

If your wondering whether laser technology is an exciting breakthrough or just another sales gimmick, you’ll want to read this short report on what exactly is a “laser hair transplant” and why you need to understand all the uses of the term “laser” in the hair restoration industry.
The first thing I want to mention is that the term “laser” is also connected to one of only three products found by the FDA to have been “clinically proven to stop hair loss or increase hair growth or both”. This product is known generically as a “laser hair comb”. It is the “real deal”.
Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with a “laser hair transplant”. So the answer to the question posed in my opening sentence is “yes, laser technology is an exciting breakthrough, but not in the area of hair transplants-so don’t let anyone confuse you either accidentally or on purpose.
Without trying to cover everything about hair restoration products and services, let me say that by no means should the reader assume that surgery is the best option for them. Chances are that it isn’t. The option of surgery is pretty far down the list for most people but when you get to that option, you obviously want the best and if you’re just starting to investigate, you’re going to hear about “laser this or that” from somebody. So take this, for what it’s worth from a guy who isn’t selling hair transplants–laser hair transplants are more of a marketing gimmick than a reason to choose this or that restoration strategy or doctor over another.
The value of laser in the medical field is it’s ability to destroy a selected target while doing little damage to surrounding tissue. In hair transplantation, there is no selected target. The sole purpose of the laser is to burn a recipient hole in the skin for the transplanted hair.
The sellers of this technique like to stress the selectivity but doing so misses the point. The hole is being made by destroying tissue and is just a fancier way of employing the old “punch” method on implantation with all the accompanying scarring and surface change. In short, there is no difference in the impact on the scalp between laser and a regular surgeon’s knife.
Don’t let anyone tell you laser transplantation is painless either. Far from it. This confusion comes about occasionally because of the laser hair comb previously mentioned. It’suse is painless but laser hair transplantation requires anesthesia every bit as much as conventional surgery.
In short we’re talkin’ about smoke and mirrors to hype one provider at the expense of another– someone not offering “laser hair transplants”. You’ve saved yourself a step down a blind alley by reading this article.
